5 ways to enjoy the summer with your pet

How we try to beat the summer heat (boredom)

Welcome to issue #9 of Chumka’s Weekly!

Hello there furriend and happy Caturday! It is very hot in our part of Canada so I decided to wake up at 5:30am to walk Chumka before it gets too hot 🙈 I walked him at 7:30am the other day and he was panting within 10 minutes 😿 If there are any typo’s in here it’s because my brain is getting used to waking up so early haha

Couple ways to enjoy the summer with your pet 🙂

I don’t know about you but I don’t do well in the heat. Each year I complain about the BC’s summer and look for ways to cool down. And since I have a hard time with it, finding “cat friendly” activities in the summer can be difficult. My cat has medium length black coat so even couple minutes in the sun (sometimes even in the shade if it’s particularly hot) causes him to overheat and start panting.

So I wanted to share with you some of the ways we try to beat the summer heat (boredom)!

  1. Go for a car ride!

Chumka also joins us from time to time to run errands – only if the places we go to are pet friendly though. But even taking a stroll through orchards is enough to make him happy; bonus points if he gets to people watch from the comfort (and safety) of his booster seat haha.

  2. Get a kiddie pool

Chumka likes water “sports” and doesn’t mind the rain but hates getting his paws wet. So I am hoping that by getting a kiddie pool (and maybe throwing couple toys in there) it will change lol

  3. Arrange play dates at someone’s place

Chumka loves going to his papa and babka’s place. He gets to play with their dog Fergus and to explore every nook and dusty corner. Even just couple hours there gets him all tired and happy.

  4. Spend some time by the water

If you live near a river or a lake, you could try taking your pet with you to spend some time by the water. Quite often there is a nice cool(er) breeze and if your cat likes the water then that’s a bonus point.

  5. Teach your pet a new trick or two 😄

Now this one might not be the easiest thing to do lol. But it’s a good mental exercise for your pet and since it does take time - it’s very rewarding AND a cool party trick 😎

Did you know…

A cat's cerebral cortex contains about twice as many neurons as that of dogs. Cats have 300 million neurons, whereas dogs have about 160 million. In fact, cats have more nerve cells in the visual areas of their brain, a part of cerebral cortex, than humans and most other mammals.

Of course, number of neurons in the cerebral cortex may not be a good indicator of intelligence. However, it’s interesting to note that cats have longer-lasting memories than dogs, especially when they learn by doing rather than seeing.

Some cool finds from the internet…

If you’ve been thinking about getting a new (card) game and love anything cat related, you’re in for a treat. Here is the game’s description:

Claw your way to victory as you live the life of a cat. The unique card-based strategy game will have players collecting human affection, making mischief, and fighting for dominance at the cat bowl. Maybe you'll choose to climb the curtains, scrounge up a midnight snack, or take an irresistibly adorable catnap. But be alert! This is a feline free-for-all, and the other cats in the game will do anything to stop you. 2-6 players, ages 8-80.
